Basic Witch

Trixie Cosmetics is a well-known makeup brand started by world-famous drag queen Trixie Mattel. Their brand is about providing pro-level cosmetics in fun packaging, and are intended for both people who have been using makeup for a long time and beginners alike. They are also cruelty-free and donate a portion of sales to The Bee Conservancy.

The Challenge

Basic Witch is intended to be a halloween-themed makeup launch. The goal is to be able to create something fun that still aligns with the Trixie Cosmetics brand as a whole, so the biggest challenge here will be to build something fresh and spooky that will still coincide with all of the brand’s current products.  Overall, the final product should lean toward the pastel goth aesthetic.

Mid-Process Thoughts

I came into this project with a pretty clear idea of how I wanted to tackle it. I knew that I wanted to have some form of illustration on the packaging just because it’s inline with the Trixie Cosmetics brand.

The type itself was the biggest challenge at this point. I explored many different typefaces before finally landing on BN Viceroy; I wanted to go for a gothic look without it being too grungy. I still wanted to maintain its overall elegant and cute look, which is what led me to customize it.

Final Look

Reflection

This was extremely fun and rewarding to work on. There are so many makeup products out there and so much thought goes into their packaging. There was an extra challenge to this project as well in that Trixie’s brand is already out there and established, so I had to think a lot about creating a product that would realistically fit into the existing brand, from the snappy name, to the colors, to the overall style in my chosen illustrations.
